Target audience

The target audience that I will be aiming for is primarily males aged between 16 and 25; my magazine will also be suitable for females aged between 16 and 25.   My target audience will listen to indie and alternative music as that is the genre of my music magazine.  They will also enjoy going to live gigs; including small and upcoming band and festivals such as Leeds festival.  The audience I am targeting will be modern and appreciate and own recent gadgets.  This means that they may download the magazine on a smart phone instead of buying it; because of this I would need to make the magazine accessible to download.  My target audience will enjoy reading the magazine's content, but images will be a main point of the magazine to attract the audience and to make it seem more light hearted.

Inspiration

Pete Doherty

This is an interview of Pete Doherty while having a photo shoot.  He wears a range of clothing and uses different props in each image.

Lighting effects

This video shows how different lighting effects can be used to change an image.  It also shows hhow to use props, make up and hair styling in a photo shoot.

H&M catwalk

The catwalk video shows alternative female outfits that could be used for a magazine, although some of the outfits would be better suited for a pop music magazine.

Topman catwalk

This video of a catwalk shows the type of clothing that can be described as alternative and indie, which is the genre of my music magazine.  This can give me inspiration as to what I dress my artist or band in.

Florence + the Machine photoshoot

This video shows Florence and the Machine having a photo shoot while giving an interview.  The photo shoot is at different locations; outside in some gardens and inside in a grand house.  This gives me an idea to not have the same background on each photo, especially in the double page spread.

Kasabian photoshoot

This is a video of the band Kasabian having a photo shoot for NME magazine.  It shows them when they having the double page spread photos taken, props are used in this photo.  The video also includes the main singer Sergio giving an interview.  This would be a good idea to do with my artists for my magazine.

NME: photoshoot

This video shows a behind the scenes at an NME photo shoot.  As I am creating a photo shoot, I could video what I'm doing to make a video similar to this.

Initial ideas for a music magazine

The demographic range I will be targeting is males and females, ages 16 – 30, people in full time and part time work, but primarily students.  The social grade I will aim for is BC1C2DE.  To achieve this, in my magazine I will include competitions and free gifts.  The magazine will be relatively cheap e.g. £2.50, it will be sold weekly, will have around 60 – 70 pages and will be sold in newsagents, stationary shops such as WHS and supermarkets.

Demographics

Researching reader profiles has helped me in planning my music magazine by helping me understand what certain audiences like depending on what music genre they prefer.
